And to keep the males away from Passion Shop, the Devil’s Canyon Brewery is opening their doors for the “Beer Friday”, beer, food, and music until you drop.

So you want to know about "Beer Friday". . . Beer Friday is family friendly. You can bring your kids. You can bring your pet. We have catered food available so we ask that you do not bring food or drinks. Devil's Canyon Brewery is a brewery and is generally not open to the public. We sell our beer to bars and restaurants up and down the peninsula. However, on the last Friday of the month we open our doors to the public at 6pm. There is no cover charge. Your first drink of the night is $8.00. You get to keep the Devil's Canyon pint glass. After that, drinks are $4.00. Wine, Soda and water are also available. We typically have at least 2 bands. If you are registered on the website you will receive a monthly email, usually the week of Beer Friday letting you know who is playing and what's going on. Otherwise, We post the bands on the website a day or two before Beer Friday. Want to know more information about one of the bands that have played at the brewery? San Mateo County authorities deployed K-9 teams and aircraft Friday to search for a missing San Carlos man who went hiking Thursday evening and did not return. Douglas May, 55, left his home to go hiking at about 5:30 p.m. and may be injured or lost somewhere in the hills west of Woodside, authorities said. No foul play is suspected.

May usually hikes around the Skeggs Point area along Skyline Boulevard, about six miles south of Highway 92, sheriff's Sgt. Linda Gibbons said in a written statement. May's father became concerned when he didn't return. A sheriff's deputy found May's car in the Skeggs Point parking lot at 12:51 a.m. Friday, kicking off the search. About 40 people, including trained volunteers and personnel of several government agencies, are now looking for May and have expanded the search to include areas off the main trails.

Anyone with information about May's whereabouts is asked to call Detective Marcus Gathright at 650-363-7823.

The preserve will be open after hours only to bicyclists. Riders are required to register on-site and attend a short briefing before heading out to the trails. Registration will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Casa Loma Road parking lot. Parking is limited to the first 50 vehicles that arrive at the staging area. More on the Tour road closures

Click here for info from the Half Moon Bay city on road closures. They're primarily concerned, of course, with traffic right in and around Half Moon Bay, but this should be helpful for people coming through town to get to our place. We're about a 15 minute drive from Half Moon Bay, BTW.

Update on The Tour

Dear all,

I rec'd this info from someone who has ridden behind the Tour twice.

The roads stay open until about forty minutes before the leaders arrive, then police escorts begin to arrive clearing the roads. About 15 minutes prior to their arrival, the motorcycle escorts begin arrive. Then you hear the helicopter and you know they’re very, very close. The “Broom Car” (actually does have a broom attached to the front grill) is the last official vehicle trailing the back end of the race; once it passes, the roads open immediately behind it. In other words, it’s a rolling road closure.

Given this info, if you want to drive and park at the farm, you should probably arrive pretty early. The riders leave Sausalito at 8:30 and we're at the 40 mile mark so at an average of 20-25mph that would put them at The Bike Hut between 10:00 and 10:30. If they close the road 40 minutes prior to their arrival, that could be as early as 9:20. Come early and enjoy some tea, coffee and homemade snacks.

I know of several people who will be riding behind the peloton and might stop for a bit. Others are planning on watching the ascent up Tunitas Creek Road and then zooming downhill and going south on Hwy 1 to view them again as they ride down Pescadero Road.

The Bike Hut - Tour of California plans

Dear all,

Our plans for Monday, February 16, the Tour of California day are shaping up. As I mentioned before, people are free to park their cars at the farm and either watch the race fly by The Bike Hut or walk or ride up the hill to watch the peloton ascend Tunitas Creek Road. If you stop by here, we'll be selling a sampling of goodies like those we'll carry regularly come Spring - coffee, tea, homemade energy drinks, onion tart, banana bread, sun-dried tomato nut loaf, coconut-date energy balls. Yum. And if you stop by, please introduce yourself.

I don't know yet any details on road closure for that day, but will pass the word along when I do. If any of you have info or connections to Amgen, please pass them along.

As I mentioned in my last email, we want to make some signs and need old bike parts to do so - if you have any rusty and/or dusty bikes, frames, or parts, please drop them by. One Bike Hut lister called it our Franken-sign - I like that.

Lastly, I've heard from several people that they're planning on making an excursion here with friends for the Tour. If you're doing so, please let us know. We're trying, impossible as it may be, to estimate how many people might be here to have enough food and drink, but bear with us, please if we run out. So, if you're planning on coming by, alone or with a group, let me know so I can start a tally.

Passion Solstice Celebration Sunday Dec 21

Please join Passion’s annual shop party in celebration of Solstice as the earth starts a new revolution around the sun.

Food this year is being prepared by Travis "Sugar Shorts" Simbulan, a frequent participant in Passion Weekly Wrides. The menu will feature hearty dishes as well as lighter fare and desserts, and includes lots of seasonal flavors such as beef roast with root vegetables, herb rubbed pork tenderloin, stuffed eggplant, and fresh fruit salad.

Of course we will also be pouring both hoppy and rooty beers from Devils Canyon Brewery, as well as have a plentiful supply of wine and other EANABS to wet your whistle!

If the weather permits it, the wheels will spin at 8:30 AM from the Skeggs Gate 08 for a loop down Virginia Mill to the Blue Blossom Trail. Steady rain on Saturday or Sunday morning will cancel the ride. Possible start relocation due to trail closure is also possible. Final call will be made Saturday night.

Sunday December 7 - Montebello to the Gap and back.

Thursday November 27 - The Turkey Ride

The Turkey Ride is a community celebration bike ride and feast for people who either don't have a family group meal planned for Thanksgiving, or who want to eat twice. The ride is up Kennedy, a long and at times steep fire road out of Los Gatos. Many riders start at 8am at one of the shops in Los Gatos. Most riders bring something to either eat or drink (or both), in quantities large enough to pass around. This is definitely a socialist event; sharing is expected. Along with comestibles, bring your own utensils, cup and plate, you'll need to take them back with you. There will be BOB trailers and Extracycles. There will be backpacks and panniers. MROSD regulations allow visitors to consume beer or wine with a picnic meal. Rangers will be present to enjoy the vibe and monitor the party, since usually there is nothing but good cheer and good behavior to be found. Sunday November 16 - Canyon, Grizzly and Ridges

The Bike Hut and 2009 Tour of California

Dear all,

It seems official. The 2009 Tour of California, Stage 3, Monday, Feb
16, will zoom by The Bike Hut.

I'll invite Lance to stop and have a treat, but he'll be a little
busy. We have no definite plans, but we'll keep you posted. Maybe
we'll just have a picnic and watch them zoom by. Any ideas?

Unless you’ve been locked in a dark basement for the last 24 hours you should have figure out that we won’t ride due to too wet conditions.

Go for a run in the woods or clean, grease, lube your bike, vote for permanent dry weather or sign up for trail work.

As well as the Wednesday evening rides. They will come back end of March or April depending on the weather so stay tuned. Until then Sunday morning rides rules, unless really bad weather. Trail closure will limit our choices to the fewer trails open in winter. Keep in mind that road rides are an option to stay in shape without damaging the trails.

Saturday October 25 - Cyclists are invited to bring their bikes to Doan Ranch

The second of four special-access days will open more than seven miles of trails on Doan Ranch to bicycles on Saturday, October 25. This special one-day activity will run from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and is limited to cyclists. A similar activity for hikers and equestrians is planned in November.

Doan Ranch is located on Cañada Road, which is reached from Highway 152. Parking will be inside the gate of the main entrance on Open Space Authority land. Parking is prohibited on Cañada Road. Participants are requested to check in with staff at the Doan entrance parking lot and sign out when they leave. Minors are welcome if accompanied by an adult.

No scheduled program is planned for the day. Cyclists will receive maps and may explore the designated trails on their own. Some parts of the trail are extremely steep, reaching a grade of 50%. Riders may leave the Doan property at the Nielsen exit and return to the main entrance and parking lot via Cañada Road.

The 702-acre Doan Ranch was purchased by the Authority in 2007. The ranch is primarily annual grasslands and chaparral interspersed with bay laurel, California sycamore and valley oak woodlands. San Ysidro Creek runs through the ranch and there are sweeping views of the valley and surrounding ridges. Doan Ranch is not yet open for general public use.

The Bike Hut on Tunitas Creek Road

Dear All,

I wanted to let you all know of The Bike Hut which will be of value to Bay Area cyclists. My wife, Christine, and I recently bought a farm on Tunitas Creek Road in Half Moon Bay - http://potreronuevofarm.org/ - which we're transforming into a non-profit dedicated to the food justice movement. We'll grow organic vegetables and offer nutrition and cooking classes for local low-income families, provide environmental education programs for all ages and more.

But we also have a one-car-garage-sized building right on Tunitas Creek Road which is now named The Bike Hut. Since this road is so popular for bicyclists, we wanted to provide you a rest stop and homemade energy snacks and drinks. At the moment, there's just a small picnic area for your use and we'll always have free water there for you. It will probably take us a few months, but we're working on recipes for organic/vegan energy snacks and drinks which we'll sell.

For now, feel free to stop, picnic, get some water, etc, and keep an eye out for more developments.

We're one mile inland from Hwy 1. You can't miss The Bike Hut - it's bright red - and a great place to take a pause before starting the ascent up Tunitas Creek Road to Skyline Blvd.

We'd appreciate your passing the word to others in the bicycle community. If you have any ideas on how we can get the word out, please let us know. Also, if any of you are planning any rides or events where we could be a pit stop, please contact us.

Highland Way (road to Soquel Demo Forest) is CLOSED

We've received notice from CalFire, your friendly Soquel Forest land managers, that Santa Cruz County Roads Department has REALLY closed Highland Way and is starting repair work on the slide. Riders posting on the NorCal Forum on MTBR noted that they were turned back and were not able to cross during construction activities. There is also construction on Eureka Canyon Road, the normal access route from Corralitos, on another slide. This nearly closes off access to the forest, although there is always climbing up through Nisene Marks State Park, or taking Eureka Canyon Road to Rider Road to Buzzard Lagoon. Please note that there is no public access from the west side of the forest due to private property; the only allowed access points are at Mt. Rosalia (top of the Ridge Trail) and Highland Way (top of Hihn's Mill Road). Hopefully they will complete construction soon!
